525 Graphic Design

During my time as a junior motion designer at 525 Graphic Design, I had the wonderful opportunity to bring books into motion for a variety of big publishing houses (such as Penguin, HarperCollins, Scholastic, and many more). Across a variety of genres, the aim was always to create a marketing stir online by celebrating each book's unique place in the market.

It was my job to interpret the client's copy brief and transform it into the finished animation. Whilst some clients had specific ideas about which visuals to show, others wanted me to choose the visual direction. Either way, there was a strong emphasis on understanding the book, the client's marketing direction, and how animation could fit within it. Using the Adobe Creative Suite, I animated book cover (and sometimes inside) artwork files, worked with typographic design, stock footage, video editing, and sound effects all to create the final animation.

My animations can be seen on a variety of social media platforms, in-store displays, and even at popular book events (such as the London Book Fair). Check out a few of the projects I worked on below...

Animated Book Marketing

Hooked

'The thrilling new novel of friendship and dangerous obsession' is a description that says it all. The animation was about highlighting the books unerving feel through the idea of luring and catching. I made it to have a similar feel and visual language to the animation that was made for Asako's previous bestselling book, Butter.

psychological thriller . literary fiction

Carly gledhill books

Two children's picture books about lively and adventurous journeys. Both animations take a character-focused approach, designed to be just as characterful, playful and lively as the books!

Girls who play dead

A gothic mystery set in small town America, where a makeup company appears to be at the heart of a covered-up murder. This animation was all about playing with the idea of makeup and how it could take on new meaning when paired with text and a brooding atmosphere.

Julia donaldson and sara ogivie books

These picture books are full of heart and character. Whether it's leaning into a detective's intellect or showing a sleepy bear waking from hibernation, both animations take a character-driven approach. Through character animation and visual storytelling, I aimed to wet the appetite of the of the audience, so they could see who these wonderful characters are.

You & Me

A story about a nostalgic 90s romance. I leaned into the decades' vibrant colours and clunky technology to tap into the audience's own sense of nostalgia.

romance . timetravel . nostalgia

What if?

What if the animation showed how many crazy illustrations the book contains?!

The caretaker

A suspenseful book with a suitably suspenseful animation to match. The artistic direction was designed to give you the clues, but no answers. Using stock footage, a constructed 3D-modeled VHS tape, and video effects, I created an unnerving 'just out of sight' feel. It was all about pacing, the camera, and the choice of sound.

suspense . supernatural . thriller

Yesteryear

An eerie satire about a traditional American housewife influencer who suddenly finds herself in the year 1805, where she is faced with the gritty truth of family farm life.

For the animation, I suggested we emphasise the camera's presence. By playing with both analogue and modern filmic effects, it creates an eerie suggestion of both time travel, Instagram influencing, and the push and pull of the truth tearing through.

Simon gets sneezed

Did you know there are 10 types of snot?! Well, according to Simon Gets Sneezed, it's true! This bouncy animation sheds light on the different types of snot that will stick with you long after you've bought the book!

A dark forgetting

A magical romantasy (romance fantasy) book expressed through the twists and turns of an ever-growing (and glowing) copper flower.

WEALTH HABIT

This book is all about the connection between little moments and the snowballed wealth they create. Here, I carried through the covers coin stack motif into the animation.
